A total of six positive samples were detected from batches trapped in Cotuit, Marstons Mills and Hyannis. Three samples of Culex pipiens/restuans mosquitoes trapped in Cotuit on 8/7/18 tested positive for West Nile Virus.

According to Cotuit Water Department a balloon test is scheduled  for Friday, June 23, 2017 at 12pm. An engineering team from Chappell will be on site to fly the balloon and take view shed analysis photos from the surrounding area. In addition, there is a boat scheduled to obtain photos from Cotuit Bay. Photo simulations will be submitted with the applications, as required by the Town of Barnstable & the Cape Cod Commission.  The balloon will fly for 3+ hours and will include heights of 150’ and 170’.  The test will be coordinated by Jay Thibault, Senior Project Manager – Wireless Services Chappell Engineering Associates, LLC

BACKGROUND

The Cotuit Water Commissioners have signed a contract with Centerline Construction to lease land for the development of a freestanding cell tower.

HERE are the preliminary engineering plans for the proposed cell tower to be located on Cotuit Fire District land. Further maps & info HERE

The consultant for T-Mobile Northeast LLC, (the Applicant) recently relayed the following to Elizabeth Jenkins, Barnstable’s Director of Planning & Development:

  • The tower will be moved towards the center of the site, but will remain on the drive to limit clearing
  •  A monopole tower with three initial carriers is proposed, with room for at least 3 co-locations
  • Height of proposed tower will be no taller than 170′ (height of decommissioned and demolished water tower)
  • They will be conducting a balloon test, date to be determined
  • They will advertise to the Civic Association and other interested parties

Why: This type of controlled prescribed fire management promotes fresh growth of new plants, provides habitat and foraging opportunities for local wildlife, and also serves as wildfire prevention and refuge for people caught in between a wildfire event. Surrounding neighborhoods are protected by reducing the chance of wildfire in Crocker Neck by conducting these low burning controlled fires on a regular basis.

Cotuit Fire Department will be issuing a reverse 911 notice!

UPDATE: June 28,2018 

The prescribed burn at Crocker Neck yesterday was successful. Twenty-two acres were treated by reducing forest floor fuels for potential wildfire risk!

There were 5 staff from NE-FFM, 5 crew members from the Mass DCR fire district (free service), and 2 from Cotuit fire conducting the burn.

The costs will be reimbursed through the Mass Wildlife 2018 Habitat Management grant award to Barnstable Conservation.

Seasonal Lifeguards Wanted

Lifeguards Wanted in the Town of Barnstable 

Job Description:  Must be at least 17 years of age (or 16 with one year of experience as a lifeguard aide). Assists in maintaining the safety and well being of others.

Minimum Qualifications:  American Red Cross LGT, Waterfront Lifeguard Certification, and Professional Rescuer CPR. Additional Qualifications Certification as above, and Division policy and Procedures set forth by the manual.

Hours: 9am-5pm, Memorial Day through Labor Day, including weekends.

Memorial Day Parade

The Town of Barnstable’s Annual Memorial Day Parade will be held on Monday, May 28, 2018. The parade will form at 9:30 am at the Centerville Library and kick off sharply at 10:00 am and proceed down Main Street to Monument Square for a brief program then up Old Stage Road to Beechwood Cemetery for the main program. This year’s Keynote Speaker is Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Ralph Negron. Lt. Col. Negron is a career Marine Infantry officer with 21 years of service. He had combat service in Vietnam with the First Marine Division as an infantry platoon and company commander as well as advisor with the South Vietnamese Army. In addition to infantry commands, he has also served as a Commanding Officer of a sea going Marine Detachment aboard a nuclear submarine tender, infantry tactics instructor, and planning officer at the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, D.C. The public is invited to bring pictures with them to the event of a family member, friend or acquaintance who has passed away and was a veteran. The parade will not reform but streets will remain blocked to allow safe foot traffic back to the Library.

 

Cotuit Fire District Public Meetings

Residents of the Cotuit Fire District will notice on the first line of the tax summary of your tax bill it reads “COTRES” meaning Cotuit Residents. This assessment is collected by the Cotuit Fire District to maintain the public water system, provide emergency ambulance and fire services, maintain & manage Freedom Hall and provide streetlights throughout the District.

Meetings of the Fire & Water Commissioners and the Prudential Committee are held at Freedom Hall. All meetings must be posted with at least 48 hours notice, excluding Saturdays, Sundays & Holidays.

The Annual Election for Fire & Water Commissioners and the Prudential Committee takes place on the fourth Tuesday in May, 4-8pm at Freedom Hall. The Annual District Meeting is held the next day, Wednesday in May, 7:30pm at Freedom Hall. Eligible voters are encouraged to attend to determine how the Cotuit Fire District tax revenues are spent.
