Oystering Notice

11/19/21 Update:

Annually our Shellfish Program sends samples of oysters from Bay St to be tested for various oyster disease as part of our routine oyster health monitoring.

The most recent pathology report shows the oysters at Bay St have a moderate to heavy presence of Dermo (Perkinsus marinus) a prevalent pathogen that causes tissue degradation in oysters and eventually mass mortality in areas that have heavy densities of oysters.

For this reason, the Town Manager is allowing us to increase the weekly limit of oysters within NORTH BAY ONLY (aka BAY ST) to one level peck (10 quarts) per shellfishing week. This change takes effect SUNDAY NOVEMBER 21, 2021.

FAQ’S:

1. Does Dermo make people sick? NO, it is an oyster disease and although fatal to oysters when the infection is heavy, there is no effect on human health. As long as the oyster is alive, it is safe to consume.

2. What if I go to Scudder, Harris Meadow or Bridge St for my oysters? The dermo infection is only prevalent at Bay St, so the weekly limit in ALL other areas of Town remains at ½ peck (5 quarts) per week.

3. If I go to a place that the limit is only ½ peck, can I go to Bay St for another ½ peck during the shellfishing week? YES, if you get a ½ peck at Scudder, Harris Meadow or Bridge St during the shellfishing week, you can get an additional ½ peck provided it is harvested at Bay St.

11/05/21 Update:

North Bay has passed water quality and will re-open to shellfishing effective tomorrow, Saturday November 6th.

A friendly reminder that legal shellfishing hours are 1/2 hour before sunrise to sunset. 1/2 hour before sunrise tomorrow is 6:54AM by the tide charts supplied by our office. That is the tide chart we use for enforcement of legal shellfishing hours.

North Bay has failed its first round of water quality and due to the Nor’Easter Division of Marine Fisheries was unable to re-sample last week.

This means the popular shellfishing areas Bay Street Landing and Great Bay Road WILL NOT be open to shellfishing on Wednesday November 3rd as originally planned.

If you are planning on going out for oysters opening day, go to Scudder’s Ln or try the recreational area at Bridge St Landing as we put some oysters there anticipating North Bay might be a delayed opening.
