Veterans Day Remembered

In memory of those who valiantly served &

in honor of those who bravely serve us now,

THANK YOU!

Veterans contribute to American society in many ways; not just during their time in active duty. Throughout our history, military service members have put on their uniforms to protect the values and liberties that this nation was built on. But that doesn’t stop once the uniform comes off and their time in active duty has ended. Veterans take the lessons they have learned and the experiences they’ve gained and continue their service to our nation by strengthening our communities. They become our nation’s leaders, scientists, entrepreneurs. Veterans are the most active volunteers working to improve communities across our country. Service goes beyond the uniform. This Veteran’s Day, we honor the men and women who have worn their uniform who continue to serve our country.

The grants, awarded through 2018 Navigational Dredging Pilot Program, are expected to remove roughly 188,000 cubic yards of sediment from the harbors of eleven different communities.Barnstable has been granted $1,000,000 to remove 44,000 cubic yards of sediment and coastal dune from the Cotuit Bay channel, increasing its width by 50-percent. The 2018 pilot program awards communities funding on a competitive basis, emphasizing on shovel-ready projects that already have secured permits from the local, state, and federal levels. The program also requires a 50-percent match commitment from municipalities receiving the funding.Update: July 26, 2018: In the Matter of Three Bays Preservation, Inc. and Massachusetts Audubon Society, Docket No. 2017-020 The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Presiding Officer has ruled in favor of Three Bays Preservation, Inc. in an 84-page ruling. DEP Commissioner Suuberg now has 30 days to adopt and certify this decision. Contact Barnstable Clean Water Coalition HERE to see a copy of this Recommended Final Decision. Counsel advises that once certified, phase 1 dredging could begin on October 15th as the permits allow. Among the many benefits of this restoration project, water quality, in Cotuit Bay, is expected to improve by three to seven percent. Great for people and birds! To date this permitting process has taken over six years at a cost of over one million dollars.

Cotuit Water Commission Workshop Tonight

UPDATE: View Zoom Meeting & Workshop HERE  & the Presentation HERE

YOU ARE INVITED TO A PUBLIC WORKSHOP (ZOOM ON-LINE)

AUTOMATIC IN-GROUND IRRIGATION CONNECTION MORATORIUM

AUGUST 26, 2020 6:30 PM

ZOOM MEETING ID: 825 7827 7242

ZOOM MEETING URL:  https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82578277242

“On July 15th, the Cotuit Water Commission voted to extend the moratorium on new connections to the Cotuit drinking water supply for automatic, in-ground irrigation systems until October 20, 2020.  The purpose of the temporary halt is to enable the Commission to review a series of proposals and seek public input on suggestions to discourage the use of the public drinking water system for lawn irrigation.

This moratorium does not affect new hook-ups for in-home water distribution.  It also does not affect existing in-ground irrigation.  The Commission is concerned that natural water bodies, especially streams and freshwater wetlands in Cotuit, are being impacted by excessive well drawdown during the peak demand months in the summer.  Water quality in the distribution system can also be impaired by excessive drawdown near wetlands, such as by manganese and iron

Among the items which the Commission is exploring are a permanent ban on new irrigation connections, water-saving devices and methods for irrigation, required inspections on irrigation systems, separate metering, premium pricing, eventual disconnections, and fertigation wells.

We hope that Cotuit ratepayers will participate in our workshop and learn more about these ideas with the Commission.  We are interested in your thoughts and ideas.”
