Inclement weather conditions have the potential to impact our service to you. The Town of Barnstable Department of Public Works is closely tracking Hurricane Lee 🌀 and potential impacts to our community.
Please be advised that should we experience above average sustained winds, the Town of Barnstable Transfer Station will be required to close. Transfer Station Closed Monday September 4, 2023

The Town of Barnstable Department of Public Works Solid Waste Division will be closed Monday September 4, 2023 in observance of Labor Day. Trash and recycling services will resume on a normal schedule Tuesday September 5, 2023. For questions, call 508-420-2258.

Loop Beach Notice

Attention Swimmers
Cotuit Loop Beach

The Town of Barnstable Recreation will begin reducing staffing at certain beach locations as employees head back to school and other obligations. Recreation will not have lifeguard staff at Loop Beach after Wednesday August 16th. There will be gate staff, and appropriate signage.

Changes to Government Access Channel Lineup

(HYANNIS, MA – August 14, 2023) The Town of Barnstable was recently notified by Xfinity of changes to the channel lineup in Barnstable. These changes will affect our Government Access Channel and its location on Xfinity for our residents. On or around August 17, 2023 Xfinity subscribers can tune into Channel 8 for our new standard definition channel or Channel 1072 for high definition. Barnstable is the first Town on Cape Cod to have a high definition government access channel. As always our content can be found on the Town website via our livestream and our video on demand archive. These changes will also affect our public access channel which is operated by the Cape Media Center in Dennis. Selective Shellfish Areas to Reopen Sunrise Tomorrow


 

 

UPDATE: AUGUST 11, 2023

Barnstable Harbor, Cotuit Bay and West Bay are all cleared to re-open to shellfishing effective sunrise tomorrow 08/12/2023.

These areas will revert to the open/closed maps from before the emergency closure meaning that any areas within these water bodies that were closed prior to the emergency closure, remain closed.

Shellfish open and closed area maps should be updated by tomorrow morning to show the most up to date maps, you can view them HERE and HERE

Be sure to check the maps tomorrow before the afternoon tide to ensure you are headed out to an open area as all of Hyannis and Poponessett Bay remain CLOSED until further notice.

Fall Citizen’s Police Academy

The Barnstable Police Department will be hosting their Citizens Police Academy this fall. The ten-week course begins on September 13 through November 15 and will meet on Wednesdays from 6-9 PM at the Barnstable Police Facility. All local residents and business owners are invited to attend. Applications can be found HERE or at the front window of the police station, located at 1200 Phinney’s Lane in Hyannis. Completed applications can be mailed or dropped off at the station, attention to Lt. Michael Clark. The email address is Clarkm@barnstablepolice.com if you have any questions. Applications will be accepted until Friday August 25th. Please apply early as the course is limited to 30 seats and it is anticipated the class will fill up quickly.

Shellfishing Closure at Loop Beach


In accordance with Chapter 130, section 74A of Massachusetts General Laws, the Division of Marine Fisheries has determined that a portion of the waters of Cotuit Bay (SC21.0) in the Town of Barnstable, no longer meets the established criteria for a status of “OPEN TO SHELLFISHING”, due to spillage of sewage from a portable restroom at Loop Beach. The status of the below-defined area shall be changed to “CLOSED TO SHELLFISHING” as of 11:00AM on July 20, 2023.
Under the authority of Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 130, Sections 74A, the status of the below-defined area shall be changed to “CLOSED TO SHELLFISHING”. Digging, harvesting, or collecting and/or attempting to dig, harvest or collect shellfish and the possession of shellfish from the below-defined area is prohibited until further notice.
Under authority of 322 CMR 7.01 (7) all permits issued thereunder are hereby conditioned to prohibit the taking, selling or possession of shellfish from the below defined area.
CLASSIFICATION: APPROVED STATUS CHANGE Status: Closed to Shellfishing
“The waters, flats, and all tributaries of Cotuit Bay, in the Town of Barnstable, north of a line
drawn from the “NO SHELLFISHING” sign at the southern end of Loop Beach (41.60513°, –
70.43718°), to the “NO SHELLFISHING” sign at the northern end of Loop Beach (41.60694°, –
70.43668°), and easterly within a semi-circle with radius of 350 ft around Loop Beach.”
