Order Issued to Wear Masks

UPDATE: May 1, 2020
The Baker-Polito Administration today issued an order requiring the use of masks or face coverings in public places where they cannot socially distance from others.

Mask and Face Covering Order: The Baker-Polito Administration has ordered all residents over the age of two to use a face covering or mask in public places where maintaining proper social distancing measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 are not possible. This statewide order goes into effect on May 6th and supersedes previously issued guidance relative to mask use.

This order applies to all workers and customers of businesses and other organizations that are currently open to the public and permitted to operate as COVID-19 Essential Businesses, such as grocery stores, pharmacies and other retail stores. Residents are also required to wear a mask or face covering at all times when using any means of transportation service or public mass transit.

A face covering may include anything that covers your nose and mouth, including a mask, scarf or bandana. Health care masks should not be used and should be preserved for health care workers and first responders. Cloth masks should not be worn by young children under the age of two, persons with difficulty breathing, or those who are unconscious, incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance. Instructions on how to make a cloth mask are available from the CDC below.

March 13, 2020

Dear Barnstable Public School Community,

Beginning Monday, March 16, 2020 all Barnstable Public Schools, including the Family and Community Engagement Center located at HYCC, and all school grounds, will be closed for a minimum period of two weeks. Given the fluidity of the situation and the ever-changing circumstances we are facing, we will regularly reassess the viability of reopening.Any extension of the closure beyond March 30, 2020 will be communicated to our BPS community as soon as the decision is made.

The health and well-being of our BPS community, and of our friends and neighbors outside of the schools, is our top priority. While I understand that the decision to close schools will cause a significant disruption to our everyday lives, we believe this action is in the best interest of the entire Barnstable community in order to slow the spread of COVID-19. This decision was made in consultation with our district physician, Dr. Katie Rudman, the Town of Barnstable and other Cape Cod superintendents. It is important to note that the Governor, Commissioner of Education, and DPH have not recommended school closure for Barnstable Public Schools. We are taking this action as a preemptive measure, in order to provide social distancing strategies for our community. During this period of closure, we are advising all students, families, faculty and staff to practice social distancing and avoid group events.

Our BPS community can expect follow up communication from me over coming days regarding the closure, including the availability of school meals. Administrators, maintenance and custodial staff should report to their school sites on Monday, March 16. Remaining BPS employees should check their email on March 16 for specific follow up communication.

Thank you for your support in keeping our schools, and community, safe and healthy.

Sincerely,
Dr. Meg Mayo-Brown, Superintendent of Schools
