Dear Barnstable Public School Community,
Beginning Monday, March 16, 2020 all Barnstable Public Schools, including the Family and Community Engagement Center located at HYCC, and all school grounds, will be closed for a minimum period of two weeks. Given the fluidity of the situation and the ever-changing circumstances we are facing, we will regularly reassess the viability of reopening.Any extension of the closure beyond March 30, 2020 will be communicated to our BPS community as soon as the decision is made.
The health and well-being of our BPS community, and of our friends and neighbors outside of the schools, is our top priority. While I understand that the decision to close schools will cause a significant disruption to our everyday lives, we believe this action is in the best interest of the entire Barnstable community in order to slow the spread of COVID-19. This decision was made in consultation with our district physician, Dr. Katie Rudman, the Town of Barnstable and other Cape Cod superintendents. It is important to note that the Governor, Commissioner of Education, and DPH have not recommended school closure for Barnstable Public Schools. We are taking this action as a preemptive measure, in order to provide social distancing strategies for our community. During this period of closure, we are advising all students, families, faculty and staff to practice social distancing and avoid group events.
Our BPS community can expect follow up communication from me over coming days regarding the closure, including the availability of school meals. Administrators, maintenance and custodial staff should report to their school sites on Monday, March 16. Remaining BPS employees should check their email on March 16 for specific follow up communication.
Thank you for your support in keeping our schools, and community, safe and healthy.
Sincerely,
Dr. Meg Mayo-Brown, Superintendent of Schools
